Comparing opposites

KW brocade skirt & blazer, Glassons peplum top (similar), Charlotte Olympia kitty flats, Alexander Wang emile tote

Still toting the tote, which has become a semi-permanent fixture on my arm due to the sheer amount of things that I can fit in here. Having become accustomed to smaller bags, I had forgotten how much one double (or possibly even triple in this case) the size can accommodate. For instance, over the weekend I managed to fit my DSLR, wallet, notebook, water bottle and yoga gear with plenty of room to spare.

It’s gotten me thinking about the debate on big bags versus small bags. On occasion, in the past with my PS11 I have found myself carrying not one, but two bags to work. Actually, this is probably more frequent than I like to admit, as I bring a home-packed lunch to work every day, as well as other miscellaneous items. In this respect, a larger bag is king, as it affords me the ability to avoid the awkward shuffle of getting on and off public transport than generally accompanies me when carrying two bags. For times when I have very little need to carry much other than my wallet, a notebook, my phone, keys and some lipbalm, a smaller bag more than suffices, and is far from a dead weight on your shoulder.

While I am usually one to loathe the effort required in shifting items from bag to bag, and risking the chance that I might leave my keys or staff pass at home, I’m hoping that over time I will become accustomed to it. I can only wonder how girls with shelves lined with handbags manage, as with the considerably low number of bags I do possess, I often find myself uncovering items that I had once thought lost in the many nooks and crannies of the ones which seldom see the light of day.

I like mid-size bags, but definitely prefer them to be on the larger end of the spectrum. It’s so nice to have everything you need right there with ya. I’ve got a vintage Tod’s D-Bag that’s the perfect size, and I’ve gotten so used to being able to schlep quite a bit along with me wherever I am. So convenient!

I’m the same – far too lazy to go swapping my things from bag to bag. I have two that I mainly use at the moment – one more for evenings, one for everyday. They are both big bags though because I always lug so much stuff around with me (especially days when I’m at work/uni – then there’s a whole day’s food in there!) 🙂

That jacket is truly a marvel.

I carry two bags to work too! I pack my own dinner to work (I work late shifts) and three days a week I lug along my yoga gear, and the awkward shape of the lunchbox means I have to carry it on its own in a canvas tote. Some days I feel ridiculous as I lumber around on public transport with my two bags Meanwhile, a couple of beautiful totes are underused because they’re not the right size/shape for my stuff, and I feel like buying an even bigger bag that holds everything. It’s not a perfect situation now!

And beautiful skirt…I love the look of a richly embellished or patterned skirt worn with simple pieces.

I had a ball at LFW. I was lucky enough to have a look while I’m living over here.
I’m in love with your wardrobe, amazing. x

This look is flawless. I am officially lusting after a Karen Walker blazer now.

I also carry 2 bags everywhere as I have to lug my gym bag to work every day + hand bag. It is so annoying.

So many good outfits lately – this is perfection. I had been carrying a small bag (Marion) but most of the time now I use my big nappy bag. I have been swapping my wallet and phone between the two. But I think my favourite bag size is medium, yet light and slouchy, that way you can choose to pack light, or throw in a few extras if need be. My Mimco bag that fits this description is getting very worn out 🙁 so will be on the lookout for a replacement soon.

I love that bag! Haha I’m the same, always finding forgotten things (sometimes treasures!) in old bags and jackets xxx

    Love this outfit!!

And I’m the same way, I am experiencing an issue right now because I just got an internship and I need to take my laptop with me. I do NOT want to bring my ugly laptop bag and I don’t have any purses that it will fit in. I did see that the Alexander Wang Dimanche would be good, but it is a bit too expensive (and the one you have looks good too because I would be able to carry everything in it! Stupid price tags)

I ramble too much when I comment on your blog! Ha ha

Adore this outfit! I love the kitty flats and the skirt 🙂
I’ve always preferred big bags because they can fit all of my things, but small bags are still fun to wear – although I do have to admit I hate cramming everything into a tiny little clutch when I go out

I agree, I can’t be doing with switching things in & out of bags, which is why I only have a few, my Balenciaga for day to day (because it easily fits everything I need) & then a few clutches & smaller bags for night time/festivals/holiday .etc The tote is really beautiful, I can understand why you’ve been carrying it so often, perfect mixture of beauty & practicality. I love the skirt too, the pattern is so gorgeous!

I start on Tuesday, yay! And yea…I’m still shopping around to see if I can find a cheaper option…because I shouldn’t spend more than 2-300, ha ha, even though I could afford the other ones 🙂

  16. September 21, 2012 / 9:26 pm

Love everything about this. It has a certain gothic charm about it but the skirt is amazing.

GREAT outfit! You have been hitting home runs consistency with your outfits lately. I want to come and live in your wardrobe 🙂 Your bag is pure perfection and I absolutely get the challenge of having to get used to changing bags. Maybe I carry too many non-essentials that changing bags is really a chore but I’m trying like you to get used to it. The bag is really the perfect size for doing the commute to work with everything. You have me thinking I need one too 🙂

    that skirt is gorgeous girl!

i’m the same with bags, i’ve always just preferred large bags that can fit everything in – my go to is a blaenciaga weekender, haha – so i can totally understand why you’re liking the bigger size! every time i carry a smaller bag i feel a little like something’s missing..
