Full circle

Kate Sylvester Top, Supre jeans, Karen Walker blazer, Charlotte Olympia kitty flats, Proenza Schouler PS11 bag, Marc by Marc Jacobs katie bracelet

I remember once, when I was in my early teens, exclaiming that I would never wear skinny jeans. I finally succumbed after two years, and ever since they have been my jean of choice. I’m not sure I ever made the same comments about white jeans, although considering how long it actually took me to buy them, it’s probably highly likely. What’s more, is that they have quickly become a staple item in my wardrobe.

In fashion, it seems it pays to never say never, as you can’t predict that your taste will remain the same six months, a year or five years from now. Almost ironically, I’ve found myself reverting back to what I was wearing when I was 17 or 18, which says a lot about both the cyclical nature of fashion, and the styles that I clearly feel most comfortable in.

Some things, have of course changed. I’ve tried to be more considered in my approach, attempting to base new purchases on the things I already have to maintain a cohesive collection of clothing. I’m more likely to splurge on something which is incredibly basic, like a black blazer, a breton top or a silk blouse when I previously would rather have spent that money building up my wardrobe elsewhere. And probably most pertinent to note, my obsession for wearing heels every day has finally waned.

Having come full circle, it’s comforting to have a handle on where my comfort levels are, and have a better sense of what does and doesn’t work for me. I have to wonder, if the women who ascribe to only wearing classic pieces have this problem, but I suspect not. Wouldn’t that be nice?!

I love that you seem to be in the same place I am with fashion right now. Over the last few months I’ve become much more critical of my purchases and put significantly more thought into curating a collection of clothes that function well together instead of simply snagging up the piece du jour. Investing in those versatile basics is exactly where my head is.

That said, I love this herringbone/tweed blazer and the little punch of whimsy your Charlotte Olympia flats add to an otherwise classic outfit. 🙂

I love the drapey top. That’s so flattering on you!

Gah – if only I had a dollar for each “I’ll never wear that” that’s hanging up in my closet right now. Maxi dresses, skinny jeans, cork wedges…

You’re so right about never saying never. I’m with you about comfort levels too so I slightly raised my eyebrows before laughing after ADR said “If you feel comfortable, you’ll never get the look” in her crazy H&M collab video.

I love this look, as usual! I just can’t pull off dressing the way you do, even though it is all the things I would love to wear. I think I used to say I would never wear skinnies too, but now I’m obsessed as well and I hate how boot cut looks on me (but I do love huge flares, ha ha)

Oh that blazer is beautiful. I also have almost nothing but skinny jeans in my closet. I hope they never get wildly unstylish again! Sounds like you have a great strategy for editing and building your wardrobe. I feel like I’m still pretty unorganized in that respect.

I am totally with you on this. My style has evolved over the years and I’ve learned never to say never and that staples are always the best pieces to splurge on. I see your charlotte olympia flats fell under that category 🙂 LOVE those.

I completely agree about never saying never in fashion! It’s hard to think that way sometimes, but I feel like there are so many things that I never thought I’d wear, but I love now. As usual, I love everything about this. The blouse is gorgeous and you can never go wrong with those flats 🙂
