Investing in the basics

Isabel Marant top & skirt, Alexander Wang kori oxords, Proenza Schouler PS11 bag, Juliet & Company necklace

After once again doing a rather substantial wardrobe cull, I’ve come to really appreciate the basics, which form the foundation of my wardrobe as I find myself increasingly drawn to the beauty of simplicity. I’m no stranger to investing in key pieces, although sometimes in the past have found myself investing in the wrong pieces. This year, I’ve focused more on the basics, spending that little bit more on a simple t-shirt that is just right, or a pair of flat ankle boots that I can run around in with ease, or the skirt which can be made appropriate for any occasion.

Or, I’ve found myself looking for a basic with a twist – like this matching top and skirt from Isabel Marant. Three-quarter length sleeves and padded shoulders add an air of difference to what would otherwise be a plain woolen top. The crossover and side drape detail of the skirt adds an interesting element as well as a bit of volume, making it unique in comparison to the rest of my skirts.

Finished off my weekend with a hot spiced apple tea from Baobab and a surprise birthday dinner for one of my besties – sometimes the best presents are the ones that you least expect. Hope you’re all having a great start to your week!

I usually look at pictures then read the post, and I was thinking how your style reminds of Isabel Marant. And sure enough when i read the post you are wearing her, you could be her muse, you even look a little like her.
PS: I love the pic where you’re smiling the most.

you look gorgeous, and i love how you do an all-black look while keeping the textures interesting. this post also reminds me that i need to get myself some sheerish black tights! 🙂

I agree with Rachelle – you look lovely when you laugh. And I agree with Miss Sophie – in that this dark outfit has been lifted by details in the textures and the cut. I like it a lot.

You have an absolutely beautiful smile sweetie and you look so chic in this all dark-tone look! I’ve always loved those Wang oxfords and really like how they’re classic but with a twist due to that cool heel. I totally feel you on the investing in basics things because they’re always the pieces that you’ll have for like forever! 🙂

Beautiful and simple outfit! I think it’s important to invest in things you will be able to wear repeatedly, are seasonless and make you happy! Everything in this look I can definitely see you wearing over and over – which is good!

I love the top & skirt, I actually thought it was a dress..I like the effortless way you styled it with the cool shoes, you look great!

That outfit is gorgeous, actually looks like a dress rather than skirt and top.

How do you find the fashion in NZ? I have been to NZ many times and all my Kiwi friends dress VERY casual. When I worked in Auckland for a few months on secondment, I couldn’t find anything I liked in the shops.

love the skirt and top and i can imagine they are very versatile pieces on their own too. loving all the small details, down to the little notch in your shoes 🙂

Oh I thought this was a dress – even better that it’s a two piece you’ve made to look like one! I’m head over heels in love with this outfit, love it all combined with the tights and the boots. It’s definitely worth investing in higher priced basics – I’ve learnt that recently too 🙂 xo
