Stumbling across those essential wardrobe pieces is one of the most important aspects of building the backbone of your closet, but the question always is, where should I start? I’ve been working on a personal project, to share with you over the coming weeks, the ten key essential pieces I think every woman should have in her wardrobe.

It’s fair to say that these might not apply to everyone in their original form; while I might opt for a pencil skirt, another might be more suited to pick a black mini or midi in its place.

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed, over the last few years as I’ve really worked to condense and create a cohesive wardrobe, is how how these ten pieces have seemed to form part of my look on an almost daily basis. These are the pieces which from the outside, don’t appear to be anything special, but can really tie together an entire look. The humble white shirt, the boyfriend tee, the mariniere, the cashmere sweater, a pencil skirt, a slick pair of denim, a little black dress some black court shoes, a leather jacket, and a trench coat; on paper they don’t read like much, but in practice will always look chic (if not a little Parisian-inspired…).

So every week, I’ll be coming to you with a new video, and new outfit post, to share how I style these key wardrobe pieces. To get a sneak peek at what to expect, you can watch my first video here.

And to round things out a little, a classic black blazer and a great pair of high waisted denim shorts wouldn’t go astray either. What are your wardrobe essentials?

Hi! I’ve been watching your video series and I was wondering how you avoid the dreaded ‘lumps’ when tucking in sweaters or tops into skirts, especially fitted ones? (random question I know!) Also, I wear a lot of sheer-ish blouses and tops like you and was wondering how you avoid the see-through factor for the office. I often don’t end up wearing mine for work because i feel too self conscious people can see my lingerie πŸ™ thanks in advance – most bloggers don’t seem to cover this stuff !!

Hi Mia, thanks for your comment. I tend to tuck in just a little of the sweater, and let the rest fold over naturally – this hides any lumps!

As for sheer blouses, I think the key is in finding the perfect shade of nude bra (which is virtually impossible) or wearing a silky cami underneath to protect your modesty. It’s not the best solution but I hope that helps!
