As a way of keeping my closet in check – and trying to stick to my style manifesto – I like to do a little wardrobe mapping at the start of each season. For me, it helps me to define direction, silhouettes, and key pieces; plus, I can identify any missing gaps (and act accordingly). Today I’ve partnered up with Everlane to share the style notes I’m planning to incorporate into my autumn wardrobe, as well as talk through five core Everlane closet staples I’m planning to have on repeat.

AUTUMN WARDROBE STYLE NOTES

01 | Button & wrap front tops
Let’s kick off with the main stylistic point for my autumn wardrobe; does it have buttons or a wrap front? It probably goes without saying why these are two core design details I’m focused on. I’ll be heading into autumn as a new mum (not long to go now!), and while practicality is essential, I want to ensure my personal style also isn’t lost.

I tend to lean a lot on Parisian and Scandinavian elements, and a good button up shirt is one of them. They look utterly chic paired with skinny or boyfriend jeans, but you can also go for an untucked look with a skirt or leggings if you’re after a more casual outfit. At the other end of the spectrum, wrap tops make basically anything you pair with them look instantly elevated; especially if they have a tie detail at the waist. I personally love this wrap style from Everlaneplus it’s easy to care for!

02 | Basic layering pieces
I’ve been taking style notes these past few months from every image that inspires me, and there’s one common theme; they’re all comprised of basics. That sums up about 90% of my wardrobe. But for my autumn wardrobe I’m planning to take it one step further. Think block colour tee’s paired with high-waisted denim and a cute pair of flats. One of my go-to layering pieces are the air tees from Everlane. These look great paired with the cheeky straight jean (the bone wash is my favourite; I also love the 90s version too!). To polish it off, I’d pop on the new day skimmer flats. The design is achingly simple, which is what makes them so chic (and an all round perfect design for a day-to-day pointed to flat).

03 | Tailoring
One of the keys to *finishing* off an outfit is to add a third piece. My oversized wool blazer was one of my most worn items in 2019, and I’m looking forward to pulling this to the front of my closet for 2020. It’s not too heavyweight, which makes it the perfect throw on piece during the transitional and winter months in Sydney. I also love the subtle herringbone pattern in the wool, which is only noticeable up close. For a trouser element, I’ve been eyeing up both the GoWeave drawstring pants, along with these slim-fitting wool trousers. To me these feel like great options to go from work to weekend, depending on how they’re styled.

04 | Cardigans worn as tops
I often talk about versatility in my closet, and how this is something I look for. And I don’t think it gets more versatile than a cardigan. It’s the ultimate layering piece, and can be worn both as a top, or as a cover up (or… thrown casually over your shoulders!). The weather over the past few weeks has been a bit of a mixed bag, so when it’s been cold I’ve often found myself reaching for my Everlane twisted merino cardigan. I got this in the heathered stone, and love the darker flecks scattered throughout. This actually works quite well as a top when belted or tucked in wrap style, and the mix of merino, cotton and linen has this feeling warm but not too heavy.

05 | Mini crossbody bags
Over the past few months I’ve really come to appreciate the mini bag. It should be big enough to hold my phone, wallet, keys, lip balm and sunglasses. Maybe a small calico bag too, in case I do some shopping. Being able to go hands free is great, and will be even more essential in the coming months. My go-to bag of choice has been Everlane’s mini form bag (pictured above in “desert sand”. The thick crossbody strap has a utilitarian feel, and the neutral blush-taupe hue fits in naturally with my closet’s rather basics colour palette.

AUTUMN EVERLANE CLOSET ESSENTIALS

To round things off, I wanted to highlight five autumn wardrobe essentials that I’ve already got set up in my closet from Everlane.

Pictured from L to R: Everlane mini form bag, Everlane pima micro rib tank, Everlane relaxed air shirt, Everlane lightweight flannel oversized shirt, Everlane oversized alpaca sweater, Everlane twisted merino cardigan, Everlane cheeky straight jeans, Everlane oversized wool blazer, Everlane cotton quilted jacket, Everlane boss boots,Everlane day heels,Everlane 40-hour flats

#1: the cotton quilted jacket
This is the jacket I never knew I needed. As someone with narrow shoulders, I tend to find myself drawn to collarless styles. It’s the most recent addition to my closet, and one of the things I’m most excited about wearing on repeat over the coming season. I opted for the hue “clover”, which is a richly pigmented khaki green. The jacket holds its structure, while still feeling soft and like it cocoons your body. As far as transitional jackets go, it feels like it has some heft to it, and the recycled polyester padding locks in a layer of warmth without adding too much bulk. I’m personally planning to throw this on as an everyday jacket with skinny and straight leg jeans, mini skirts, and cute mini dresses. All worn with a great pair of booties, of course. I’m wearing the cotton quilted jacket above in a size small.

#2: pima micro rib cotton tank
It’s hard to narrow down my favourites from Everlane, but one range I keep finding myself drawn to is their pima micro rib. It’s super stretchy, lightweight, and wears incredibly well. Over summer, I’ve practically lived in the scoop neck tank from the range; it’s not cut too low, and it hugs your curves in all the right places. At the moment I only have this in the white, but am planning to order the grey and black to round out my stash, as it’s such an easy throw on piece – or a great base layer. I wear the pima micro rib cotton tank in a size XS.

#3: the relaxed air shirt/lightweight flannel oversized shirt
Relaxed tailoring is playing a huge part in shaping my autumn wardrobe, so it’s no surprises that I had to mention a good button down. I’m partial to a classic which option, but a lightweight flannel is a nice alternative, especially as it starts to cool down. I anticipate myself doing a lot of half tucks, full tucks, or just wearing these loose, perhaps with the cotton quilted jacket layered over top for warmth. I typically wear a size US2 in Everlane blouses, but sized up to a US6 in the relaxed air shirt, and the US4 for the lightweight flannel oversized shirt.

#4: cheeky straight jeans
It’s probably a little optimistic of me, but I’m hoping to get my favourite cheeky straight jeans back in rotation post-pregnancy. I don’t tend to stray too far from my favoured skinny leg silhouette, but these strike the perfect balance of skinny and straight. From a styling perspective, I’ll be wearing them mostly with the basics I’ve already mentioned. Slim fitting tanks; oversized shirts; loose airy tees; and for when it’s cool? A great knit sweater. I have the cheeky straight jean in my usual denim size: 25. This gives me a little bit of extra wiggle room in the seat and thigh, and I feel like it’s more of a true “mom”-style straight tapered fit. Plus the elastane in the denim helps to add a bit of stretch. My inseam is pretty short for my height (I’m 172cm tall with a 28 inch inseam), so I wear these in the ankle length.

#5: the oversized alpaca sweater
Ending this autumn wardrobe essentials round up with a classic crew neck sweater. To date, the one I’m most excited by in my closet is the oversized alpaca sweater in ‘almond’. This is a creamy oatmeal hue, with little beige flecks throughout. Neutrals are still a big trend for the season ahead, and this ticks that box in a big way. You can’t go wrong with this oversized silhouette. It’s long but slightly boxy through the body, and the sleeves have a puffed effect to them. I wear the oversized alpaca sweater in a size S for a relaxed fit.

Thanks again to Everlane for partnering with me on this post.

    Hi Jamie,
I hope you are feeling well!! Best of luck with the birth! I saw you were looking for a cardigan – me too! – I ordered this one https://www.massimodutti.com/us/women/accessories/bags-%26-wallets/v-neck-wool-cardigan-with-buttons-c675016p8813984.html?colorId=745&categoryId=675016
Massimo Dutti has some other nice looking ones too. Food for thought! I don’t know how you do the 30 day rule – I did it for January but February has been a bit of a disaster in terms of impulse buying. I will keep trying though! Best, Emer.

Thank you so much – not long now at all!

Ooh that looks really lovely, and I adore the texture/weight that it appears to have from the pics. One of the things I’ve come across is that most styles have been too thick and I really wanted an option that felt lightweight which would easily tuck into denim or skirts and be a bit more “fluid” against the skin. I really want something in an oatmeal or burnt caramel hue. In the end, I decided to buy the Sezane cardigan I shared in my things I wanted to buy but didn’t video. I’d kept it on my wishlist and once the 30 days was up, found I was STILL thinking about it. It’s not perfect, but it’ll do the trick. Definitely planning to share more thoughts on it in upcoming videos (as well as when I get around to doing a second Sezane review video).

If it makes you feel any better, I had a couple of slip ups earlier in the month – mainly I think because I’m coming to the end of my pregnancy and I’m excited to be almost able to wear regular clothes again, plus I was encouraged to make some second hand buys I wouldn’t have known about by a girlfriend LOL. Aside from that anything I’ve bought has been planned, including a couple of core accessories which I’d had on my wishlist for 6 months + so looking forward to incorporating those into my outfits 🙂 Don’t beat yourself up too much about those slip ups, they happen to the best of us! 😀
