Click Frenzy has just ended, and with the next big round of holiday promotions – Black Friday – almost on our doorstep, I thought I’d share a simple tool I’m using to avoid going overboard and over-budget. Make a list. It might sound basic, but the allure of 40, or even 50% off can be enough to derail the resolve to only buy what you need.

Wearing Everlane cotton crew neck sweater, Citizens of Humanity emerson slim fit boyfriend jeans (colour is “ever”), Veja esplar sneakers (review here), The Curated coat in camel, Polene Number One mini bag in ‘sand’, Missoma mini molten necklace, Linjer necklace and ring

I used to see sale season as a bit of a free-for-all. I’d run through every category, browsing aimlessly by size in the hunt of something “cute”. I’ve completely changed my tune in recent years. Sale season for me has become an opportunity to invest in slightly more expensive items, buy home decor or household necessities like cookware or bed linen, or to pick up gifts for loved ones and make my budget stretch further.

What I do at sale time, is build a list. If I’m planning on adding to my wardrobe, I take a step back and evaluate what it is that I think is missing. Is there anything I actually need? It goes on the list. Is there a particular handbag or pair of shoes I’ve been eyeing up for months? That goes on the list too. I think about whether any of our kitchen tools need replacing as they’re worn out, or if our bed linen could use an upgrade (spoiler alert: this year it really did).

The hardest part is *actually* sticking to the list when the sales pop up. Remember, if it’s on the list, it’s probably something you actually need. And if not? You’re probably being enticed by the bargain than the actual item itself.

I’ve found that this is a really good strategy that works for me, and if you stick to it, it’ll help you keep on budget during sale time.

If you’re curious to know what’s on my wishlist for Black Friday, I shared an update in my latest YT video which you can watch HERE. I’d love to know if you’re planning on making any purchases, or if you’ll be sitting out the sales this year in the comments! x
