Last night, in a crowded upstairs loft, I attended a presentation of Salasai’s Autumn/Winter ’14 collection, Liberté et D’Amour. Translated to english, the name of the collection means ‘freedom and love’, and there couldn’t be a better way to describe it. Illustrious silk blouses, and softly draped dresses formed elements of Salasai’s signature style, cleverly juxtaposed by oversized winter knits and heavy flannel coats. The print of the season, in a muted grey, brings botanical flowers and the birds that live amongst them to life, the light-handed use of colour giving just a taste of a menagerie of tropical birds and wildflowers.
A grungy elegance is paired with athleticism, as Creative Director Kirsha Whitcher brings sports luxe to the label. Oversized raglan tees, and sweaters tied at the waist are given a glamorous upgrade, worn effortlessly with luscious silks and oversized jewels. Cohesive and directional, it was for me, yet another highlight in what has been an incredible week of New Zealand fashion.
