I find restraint over the sale period as difficult as the next person, with a continual stream of emails headlined similarly titled 50% off storewide entering my inbox. I’ve been trying to ‘shop my wardrobe’ as much as possible as of late in an effort to stay away from the shops and enjoy what I already have, rather than what I could potentially own. Browsing the sales on websites like Shopbop and Net-a-Porter (quite possibly the two online stores I frequent the most) lays ground for more temptation, although a continual reminder to myself that the SS’14 collections are less than two months away seems to be helping me resist.

It’s probably ironic that I’m posting this just after my favourite sale picks, BUT, one of the things that has been on my mind lately is the shelf life of an ‘it’ item. Recall those Miu Miu satin printed heels of a few years ago? They were popular beyond belief, selling out worldwide if I remember correctly, yet I can’t bring to mind the last time that I actually saw a photo of these pop up online. Perhaps I’m just being cynical, but it’s really allowed me to put what I already have and the things I have expressed purchasing into perspective in this consumer-driven world. We always seem to be looking for the next big thing, and instead I’d rather put my focus on the things that will stay with me for a long time, as the whole process of buying and selling as tastes and preferences quickly shift is exhausting to say the least.

The last week has been a mixture of pulling out old favourites (like the Karen Walker skirt above), in addition to more recent purchases (like my Witchery leather leggings and cable knit jumper), which helps to mix things up a little. With the final few of my winter essentials currently en route to me via the US, I’m hoping to be able to see out the next two months with minimal clothing expenditure. I mean hey, a girl’s gotta have goals right?

You’re moving seamlessly into the winter wear and keeping your style. I loved the DP skirt you featured – I’m quite tempted. I should be shopping my own wardrobe but you now have me looking at flowery skirts which I never knew I needed. How did that happen?

Smart move whipping out old favorites and shopping your closet 🙂 It’s definitely very easy to get pulled into buying the hottest it thing and then never really getting much wear of it. Good luck on your next two months 😉

I have utter respect for you staying grounded during the sales. I know it is easy to get excited with them and before you know it, things are arriving that no-one could imagine they would ‘need’. I cope with my consumerism by making sure I sell regularly and do clean outs but believe me, I hear what you are saying. Maybe classic and timeless pieces are the way to go. Then hopefully the desire won’t be as strong to replace them since they will still be relevant in fashion speak a few years from now. You definitely have me thinking investment over seasonal.

Loving this look! And yes, it is so hard to resist the sales, once NAP gets to final reductions I am almost unstoppable! And yes, its funny to think about all those things I really wanted but now I don’t even remember them. So now I try to get stuff I know I love and will last through the seasons 🙂

Totally love what you had to say about the shelf life of ‘it’ items and yes, sometimes sales can definitely make us believe that we need things that we probably didn’t give a second glance at before. I think it’s smart that you’re trying to go shopping in your own closet which is filled with awesomeness by the way. And this combo with the bomber and skirt that you’re wearing is so good babe! Lovin’ the setting of your photos. 🙂

Good luck to you! So many temptations at the moment. I’m trying to eBay old stuff before I buy anything new. I’m eying off the Isabel Marant Serra pants, Karen Walker red paisley print ankle boots and waiting for a couple of Lover pieces to go on sale. Wouldn’t mind an AW Rockie too. Otherwise, I’m winter ready. I love that Rosebud lace skirt too but not sure if the 10 would be too big. Plus, when you factor in shipping its really not that cheap.

I need to read this and reread it again and again and again until I get it into my noggin. I will not crumble at the sight of another sale in my email or instagram feed. Must not.

I gave in to the Gorman one day sale last week and took home two pairs of pants. One a wardrobe staple, another…animal print…maybe not so much hahaha. I look to you and Mich (aminuteawayfromsnowing) for affirmation and i’m all okay again.

Have a great week ahead Hun!

I was trying to figure out how to best wear my printed skirt (seeing that I hardly wear skirt and all) and you’ve shown me a perfect example. I hear you about IT items. I’m so wary about these now. I was this close to buying the Valentino Rockstud heels and then decided that they may just go out of fashion within a year or two.
