Late last year I spoke a little about the brands I’d like to try in 2019, many of which were either brands which offer high quality wardrobe staples, or have ethical and sustainable business practices in place (the latter of which I’d love to support more where possible). Perhaps at the top of the list of brands I was curious about was Sezane. I’d heard so many good things about the French brand both on YouTube and on blogs, that it seemed a natural place to start, so I decided to get on the front foot and do a cheeky order just ahead of Christmas to satisfy my curiosity.
As is one of the disadvantages of shopping online, you never quite know what you’re going to get until you actually receive your items, so I thought I’d share my experience as a first time buyer, and whether I’d consider shopping from Sezane again in the future.
The online shopping experience
So let’s kick this off by touching on the navigation of the site briefly. As with all the branding, the website store front is awash with beautiful imagery depicting the – even more beautiful – clothing. The navigation however, is slightly complicated. Categories of items are split into sub-categories; essentially, I was unable to look at all sweaters at once, instead having to browse via type (chunky knitwear, light knitwear & the icons). For me, this is just reflective of how I like to shop so this will come down to personal preference, but I like to see all the options, and then filter as I see fit, so this isn’t really my preferred way of browsing online.
And… while the product imagery is beautiful, I do find that for many items, small details weren’t distinguishable and it was quite difficult to get a real sense of how an item would look in real life. I might be really picky, but I think ghost images, alongside simple studio shot images facing camera to showcase the front, side and back are really valuable when trying to sell a product to a customer (especially if it’s an online only experiencer for the shopper), which can then be supplemented with editorial style campaign imagery.
Now, let’s move on to delivery. The thing I was most impressed with was just how quickly my order from Sezane arrived. If memory serves me, it took less than a week from order confirmation to delivery, which took me a little by surprise especially as delivery times tend to be delayed in the lead up to Christmas.
The items are beautifully packaged using recyclable materials, and each parcel has a personalised sticker denoting that it is just. for. you. This really added to the whole experience of purchasing from the brand, and made unwrapping my items feel really special.
One thing I hadn’t realised was that one item was on pre-order, which shipped out separately to the other items I’d purchased. Perhaps it was coincidence, but my pre-order item shipped the day after the other two items were dispatched, so from my perspective I would have been happy to wait the additional day to receive everything at once, to combat any additional emissions resulting from my order. It’s not at all a deal breaker and many other brands do this too, but it just highlighted to me that in those instances, the shopper should be able to choose whether to wait or receive their order in two separate parcels.
What I bought from Sezane
Sezane Sybille Blouse | Earlier in the year I purchased a beautiful pleated top from Elizabeth & James in a bone hue (similar here) which I absolutely love, and felt that I had room for one in another neutral colour (read: in black) in my wardrobe. The Sybille blouse from Sezane completely fit the bill from a design perspective while offering something uniquely different. I loved the v-neck design in the front and the back, and there was a small frill detail around the neckline which added a nice feminine touch. I also loved how the pleats went from being finer pleats to thicker ones. Details are e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.
What I thought | One thing I completely forgot to do was check the fabric content for anything I ordered, and I was immediately struck by the fact that this was a 100% polyester piece – something I try to avoid where possible. And the fit was just off on me. It wasn’t clear from the product imagery, but the top had a slight fit and flare cut to it. It nipped in at the waist and then flowed out, as evidenced by the change in pleats. I also didn’t love the neckline on me, which is a personal thing and something that I could only determine by trying the piece on. Ultimately while it is a beautiful-looking blouse, it fell a little flat and I couldn’t see this being something I’d reach for much, if at all.
Sezane Gaspard Jumper | My next pick was the Gaspard jumper in ecru; a pretty soft knit sweater with a button back detail. Versatility is a really important thing for me, especially as I’m trying to tighten up my wardrobe, and I loved that this could be worn three different ways. It had a simple round neckline, and I saw this as potentially being a great workhorse piece throughout winter and the transitional months.
What I thought | I’d actually long had my eye on Sezane’s Barry sweater (with the v-neckline), but as most sizes and colours I was drawn to were sold out, I decided to give the Gaspard jumper a go as an alternative. The ecru hue is a soft milky white, which fit in perfectly with my wardrobe’s more minimal colour palette, and I figured it would take the place of this button up cardigan I’d long been eying up. Of all three pieces I bought, this turned out to be my favourite by a mile. The fabric is a blend, so it feels really soft against your skin, and the pearly buttons down the back looked elegant and perfectly matched. Sadly, this wasn’t a match for me. The neckline and style felt a little ‘Stepford Wives’ when I tried it on, and I couldn’t help shake the feeling that it wasn’t exactly the sweater I’d set out to purchase. In short, it’s a beautiful sweater in a semi-sheer knit, but it didn’t work for me. In hindsight, I should have held out for the Barry sweater. Lesson learned.
Sezane Dwee sweater | My final purchase from Sezane was a fun fairy floss coloured cable knit sweater. Pink was a major accent colour for me in 2018, and I really wanted to work that into my closet a little more for 2019 (though you could argue the last thing I needed was another pink sweater). I liked that this had a simple crew neckline and a classic fisherman style knit, with openwork details at the sides. The fit is loose through the body, and the sleeves have a slight billow to them, perfect for that nonchalant, effortless look.
What I thought | I was so set to love this sweater, but the first thing I noticed when I unboxed it was the fabric. It had a coarse acrylic hand feel which felt much cheaper than the approximately $170 AUD I paid for it. As I mentioned earlier, I paid little attention to the fabric content when placing my order, browsing on the assumption that many of the items were made of natural fibres. The composition of this piece turned out to be 40% polyamide, 32% kid mohair, 28% wool, and the result was something that felt cheap and itchy against my skin. What I did love? The cut – perfect; the colour – just stunning. It looked really beautiful on, but given my desire to be more intentional about what I add to my wardrobe, this too was another item I had to return.
Would I shop from Sezane again?
First impressions count for a lot, but despite having a less than stellar introduction to the brand, I’m not ruling it out as an option when looking to add something new to my closet. While I’ve given up on completely trying to emulate Parisian style (instead choosing to find my own style niche), I am still very much drawn to that look, and in essence, what the ‘Sezane’ girl represents.
My actual ‘shopping’ experience was largely positive and I was seriously impressed with how quickly I received my items, and the attention to detail both parcels possessed. It felt special and really set the order apart from other purchases I’ve made online (yes, even luxury ones).
The sizing system seemed straight forward enough for me, particularly as I was shopping for pieces with a relaxed silhouette, and I found they all fit true to size.
One thing I will be paying close attention to if or when I place a second order, is the fabric composition. I’m trying to rule out synthetic fibres as much as possible, as I try and rebuild any gaps in my closet with more natural materials like silk, cotton and wool. Value is something that is also quite important to me, and given the pricing, I do want to ensure that I’m getting my money’s worth – something I didn’t feel was reflected in two of the pieces I purchased.
For anyone wondering about returns, I did have to bear the cost of this myself (which I think set me back about $60-70). So if returning an item to Sezane isn’t going to be a straightforward process for you, you may like to consider whether the cost of sending it back is worth placing the order in the first place, if it isn’t right for you.
In terms of their sustainable and ethical practices, there is some information on their website here. Largely, the focus is on creating quality garments, though their spring/summer collection will include an increased focus on sustainably sourced fabrics such as linen.

Yikes – the cost of returning those items is extremely high (and I know it doesn’t help now, because it’s after the fact, but if you pay with PayPal and return an item, PayPal will reimburse you up to 45AUD in return shipping costs). No wonder I see so many Sezane items for resale with tags attached!

Just food for thought – while I appreciate your intention to support sustainable companies, what about the fact that not only do the products need to be flown halfway across the globe, but – because you didn’t keep the products – then back again.
I am guilty of this too and am trying to order less and not from overseas. I know that it’s not easy here in Australia, but that’s perhaps something to keep in mind….

It’s so tricky isn’t it – it’s something I struggle with a LOT because I actually tend to prefer American contemporary designers over most Australian ones (which generally are a bit too dressed up for me most of the time!), and have ever since I really started getting into fashion. I try to do what I can to reduce my emissions (like paying carbon offset when flying etc) and I hope that my reduced shopping will also do that, even if when I do end up buying something it’s from an international store. Hopefully in future, I won’t need to return anything! x
I just want to comment that I too was drawn in by Sezane’s marketing and the enthusiastic praise everyone had for the brand. When I went to Paris, it was one of the big things I wanted to check out. I ended up waiting for 30-45 minutes to get in because there was a massive queue and when I finally got up the steps, I felt very disappointed as almost everything in the store didn’t live up to expectations. A lot of trendy cuts and items and some really nice sweaters and denim, but overall you could tell with a glance in person the fabrics of almost everything were cheap looking and even worse to the touch. As per your conclusion, I’m not sure Sezane clothing is worth it at that price point.

Wow I can’t believe there was a queue just to get in the store! A lot of people have said it’s best to go in store to get a real feel for the fabrics – and I’d love to do that to experience it for myself, but I have certainly come to that conclusion that the price point is not exactly worth it for their items. A shame! They have such great marketing too!
Wow Jamie. I had no idea about the composition issues. I received the Sezane catalog in the mail and immediately fell in love with the sweaters. I didn’t check the composition either. I just assumed they’d be wool. While I’m not set against buying from the brand I won’t rush in either.

Yeah I have to say I really did myself a disservice there. I’d heard ONLY good things and given I’d read their mission statement which talks about using natural fibres, and for the price tag, I figured they’d have to be all wool sweaters! I will definitely be a lot more careful in how I shop from there should I make another order in future! x
I browsed their website numerous times especially this winter when I was looking for a coat. I too was disappointed by the quality of fabric they use, and for the price they are charging I just felt they are really not value for money.

I’m in the U.S. and recently had the same experience with an order from them (minus the insane return fees). I’m glad I’m not the only one! I got the Gaspard sweater in Ecru thinking I could wear it to work. It was so sheer that nothing I did (nude bra, camisole, etc.) helped. It was super shapeless on me and just looked kind of gross. The cardigan side looked like something my grandmother would wear. Part of this is that I’m short-waisted, but European brands normally fit me well, etc. The material was also so hot that I was sweating as soon as I put it on and was itchy. I also ordered a pair of pants that were so small that I couldn’t get them past the knee… They also looked like some sort of fast fashion item. I do not think I will order anything from Sezane again.

That sucks to hear you also didn’t have the best experience – and I agree with your sentiments on the Gaspard. The Barry I think has a much nicer silhouette, and I suspect the deep V helps when wearing it like a ‘cardigan’. I always believe in second chances and I believe the brand is launching more linen/cotton pieces for the NH spring/summer, so I may look to try the brand again then but I’m not really in a rush, either! This is a helpful post. Their photography and marketing is so compelling, i find myself browsing the site often even though everything is so expensive. This makes me a little less sad that I can’t really afford to buy their clothes!

The quality of their stuff for the price had disappointed me. I bought a faux fur coat which looked great at first. I only wore it one season and it started getting matted at the elbows. I’ve had far cheaper faux fur for far longer and nothing like that has ever happened.
I do love my handbag. It’s gorgeous leather and definitely holding up well.

I feel like their use of synthetics is intentional – for drape, price etc – but I personally try to limit how much synthetic clothing I buy. It can be a deal breaker (depending) for me – all I can say is I definitely need to be paying more attention to fabric composition next time I shop from there.

I recently bought some Sezane items and was very happy. But I was very particular about what I bought. They have a lovely yellow silk dress for £150 which I thought was a great price. But I do skip the stuff which has polyester- I don’t think their prices for the poly items makes sense. Its way too much. Waiting for a 100% wool / cotton jumper from them now!

My biggest mistake was not checking the composition. I’d had so many people tell me that they were sustainable etc, that I took it at face value and just didn’t do my proper due diligence which definitely soured my own experience. I totally agree with you, the prices for polyester pieces they have are sky high and too expensive for what they are. I do want to give the brand another go though, to trial out some of their natural fibre pieces. The exchange rate is dreadful for the US to AU dollar right now though, so holding off until it improves a wee bit 🙂
I asked them whether they use ethical silk or not but Sezane ignored my questions . The silkworms are steamed or boiled alive, and even ASOS has banned the material. Even though I managed to snag some great items from the Archive sale, I did not end up purchasing and was rather annoyed that I didn’t receive an honest answer.

I am extremely disappointed by Sezane based on my one ordering experience. I will never purchase anything from them again.Sezane provides absolutely no customer service. I returned nearly my whole order because fit was very inconsistent. Even though I followed their return policy, I received only a fraction of what I am owed for the return. I have contacted them numerous times in the last month and they have yet to reply. Beware of this company. The clothes may be lovely but the company is not.

I have to say, that first order is so important in determining whether you’ll have a repeat customer – I know a few people who swear by the brand (so I’m willing to give it a second chance) but so many others like yourself had a similar experience to me on my first order. That’s incredibly disappointing that you haven’t received your full refund. Have you considered reaching out to your credit card provider and placing a claim that way also? I purchased a really darling blouse from Sezanne two months ago and have worn and washed it all of two times. I discovered a defect where the collar is stiched to the shirt. The fabric must have been improperly cut and is just shredding and will not stop. To fix it would compromise the shape of the shirt.
I’ve shopped there for myself and gifts many, many times and asked if they would consider an exchange this one time. Instead, they grilled me on what I wash the shirt with, how I wash, what temperature water, what soap, how I dry it, asked for photographs, and then after this what felt like a BAR exam, told my to get it fixed at a tailor and that they could pay the expense (after a tailor has said it cannot be fixed).
I will not be shopping there again. There are better brands that stand by the quality of their product enough to admit something is worth damaging out.

I absolutely love Sezane! Almost my whole wardrobe is full of it 🙈 however, I do pick my pieces and since I’ve been to the shop a lot (go to Paris so often, it’s a 3 hour train ride away!), I know what to buy and what not. The things I usually don’t buy are:
– cotton blouses; they’re always too small or too large. Mainly because I have a larger cup size 😬
– right fitted blouses (same as above)
– most trousers because I’m an in between size
– most shoes because they are often quite narrow, though I’ve had luck with a pair of heels!
– some jumpers because they shred all over the place because of mohair and alpaca. The Gaspard jumper luckily doesn’t shred!
I loooove the Gaspard jumper because it suits my body type so well and it’s so soft 💜
Things I do buy:
– loose fit silk/viscose (mostly) blouses in a size smaller than usual, they are so flattering!
– linen T-shirt’s in a size smaller to two sizes smaller, depends on the fit
– merino wool jumpers 💜 (depends on the fit, but usually either my normal size or one size down)
– shoes with rounded noses (my usual size)
– Gaspard as mentioned (two sizes down)
– jewelry
– the perfect slim 7/8 jeans (perfect fit and also length for my height!) (usual size)
If you have any tips for the mohair/alpaca sweaters not to shred, I would love to hear it!
Don’t understand people saying they don’t have that problem, while I try on the same sweater and I see hairs flying all over! 😬

I returned my two tops… Sezane cardigan and blouse too. The Ann shirt and the Garance jumper. They weren’t as amazing in real life. At least not worth $200 Canadian per item. For the price of those two, I got 3 bras, 2 pants, 3 blouses, 2 camis, 3 Sezane sweaters, 1 pair boots and 12 socks from AliExpress. Yes, Sezane products can be found for less than half the price on AliExpress. Kept the Sezane sneakers because they were quality leather.

Shoes are still great. Of course they will be hard to keep clean as they are white. And I wear them occasionally only on sunny days or indoors. But good quality. They get compliments from people who have good taste. 🙂 The sezane wool sweater from ali express is great too. So warm. I think their synthetic ones are not great.

This was a very informative article and I appreciated all the detail and reasonings behind the choice to return. Sustainable and ethical companies are difficult to find especially if you’re looking for classic pieces that will stand the test of time. I’ll definitely consider fabric type when ordering. I’ve been sleuthing the site for some time now and I’ll try some items out.

While I know many adore the brand and have had wonderful success buying from Sezane, I’m conscious that it’s not always the case, and can say from experience that returns is a bit of a process in of itself. Thought you may find it useful to know I have quite a few Sezane pieces from before they were well known and the quality of the material was much better back then.
I find their winter lines now a waste of time (most jumpers very itchy and fabric very cheap looking) yet their summer dresses in 18 and 19 were lovely. Some really unique prices which I’m so happy about and the quality of the 2017 2018 lines for summer is a far cry from now. The peices are much thinner now I find for summer and I’m hoping they will return to quality over quantity but I doubt it due to their success.
I would say stay away from most of the winter line unless you can go in store to feel the fabric, summer lines I would say the t shirts with lace and details are worth it, so are the boyfriend shirts and the Pierre blouse is thin but dainty and some of the skirts and shorts are very nice too. I’d also stay away from the leather shoes they are expensive and look cheap (as in uk new look style cheap) but the leather trainers, boots and suede shoes are better quality.
If you want the right size also you need to be online on a Sunday at (was 9am now it’s 9:30am) and have what you want to buy in ur minds eye already.
I think they now do free returns from aus too if u buy a certain amount.
Summer lines I still buy all the way for certain peices, autumn and winter not worth it.
If you want sustainable check out Loup Charmant I have a few of their latest pieces and they are stunning (my opinion) I have the Diana dress which I love and linen is a fave fabric of mine.

It’s so interesting to see that someone else had this experience! I have two silk dresses things from sezane that I love- but since then I have ordered and sent back two separate boxes of items that were huge disappointments. One dress was so beautifully cut, and when I tried it on the gold threading was unbelievably itchy against my skin. I don’t see how anyone was able to wear it, despite how pretty it looked. If you look at the product details on their site, lots of items that come in multiple colors will use different fabrics- poly and silk, for example. With no price difference. Gotta be careful. And ditto on the photos- a lot of their photos only show people sitting down wearing the clothes- dresses that cost 200+ usd and you don’t know what the back looks like! Ridiculous. Anyway, I definitely won’t order from them again, but if I’m ever in a city with one of their boutiques I might check it out.

Just picked up you comments about Sezane and the fabric composition. Funnily enough this is something I always consider when purchasing items and more especially when ordering on line. It is very important to me, as I don’t believe in paying a high price for a jumper for example that is mainly made of acrylic. Same with a blouse that’s made entirely of polyester. Also, these type of fabrics make you perspire, and it’s not what you want when you are busy at work all day. I have only purchased 3 items from Sezane, and was pleased with them at the time, a silk blouse being one of the purchases.

I have to admit, I have NO idea what I was thinking when I placed my initial order – I’d heard that the brand was sustainable from numerous larger bloggers, and took that at face value, assuming this extended to all fabrics (which to that point, would actually mean also recycled man made fibres too!). I’ve gone on to make a number of additional orders, and while I do think Sezane can be a bit hit or miss, they do have some absolutely beautiful items! Definitely one you have to order from with care 🙂
I completely agree. For the price there should be 0 polyester. I have a few items and I think I just fell victim to their marketing. Gold plated jewelry for a crazy price too. The customer service is horrendous. I recieved a dress with a hole and food stains. I paid $180. They said take it to dry cleaning. We will cover it and give you a little extra. (I feel like the dress should’ve been discounted) So they covered the dry cleaning and gave me a whopping $2.00 for the inconvenience.

Honestly I am right there with ya! I live in Europe so at least I don’t have to pay for return myself but the three times I ordered from Sezane, I also felt like once I received the clothes the fabrics were disappointing (too costly for what they were) and they just didn’t fit as well as expected. I also think the website and shopping experience are super annoying! Size indications are often missing, the filtering is weird, it just got me all frustrated and made me want to stop browsing.
I also think the photos are not very helpful, often three times almost the same imagine, super zoomed in but zero photos with just a neutral background where you see the full item front and back. So I found that I only saw the real shape once an item arrived in the mail only to send it back again because the fit was off.
I keep ordering because the stuff looks so nice online but rarely keep anything besides small items like a jewellery box or a T-Shirt.
I am glad I have read this article. I’ve just ordered something and told it was on its way. It’s been a while since I placed the order and today I got a note saying the order is being returned to Sezane and won’t be sent back to me. Clearly an issue with the courier company as no one has tried to deliver anything.
The return postage is extortionate and you would think they used the Notting Hill store for orders.

That’s really frustrating – so sorry to hear you also had a bad first experience. It’s true what they say – first impressions matter. I’ve gone on to place many more orders (just as I felt it was only fair to the brand), and have found the customer service to have improved since this order and I haven’t had any issues bar one return where I had to follow up about a refund. That said, there are so many gorgeous brands out there offering these sorts of styles which are also great alternatives (and in some cases ,much more affordable!) xx
Hey! I have the same issue but have been reassured that they needed to sort out some paperwork (due to Brexit) before the order is sent to me. I know it’s not ideal and not great considering that they knew Brexit was going to happen on 1 Jan and also I had to chase them for updates, rather than them updating me on their own accord. I’m hoping that this is all worth it! By the way, their returns from the UK is free as well so I wouldn’t worry.

I do buy from every collection, but I am mostly drawn to their accessories. I do love the style, very elegant. I also understand what you mean when you say you are attracted to what a Sézane woman represents. My only issue is the quality really. The golden plating fading on some of the pieces so quickly that it makes feel stupid for paying so much for this. Mind you, I’m very fussy about my accessories and I take care of them so much.
I do like the dressed as well, but it seems that the sizes are always off, 8 it too tight on the rib cage and 10 is too loose that my chest area looks empty.. I have one Sézane boots, it’s quite comfortable simple and that’s it.

Hi! so I usually wear a size US4, small, or French 36 in Sezane. I’m a size AU8 for reference x
I’ve shopped Sezane in store and have purchased some of my favorite sweaters from there. Try again-I think you might find some good pieces!
