Thoughts on my summer style

Cliches about being a creature of habit aside, my summer style is wholly uncomplicated. Unfussy tiered midi or maxi dresses, effortlessly paired with some slip on slides.

After two months of feeling “lost” and at odds with what to wear, I’m finally starting to find my groove. I reflected on this a little late last year, but ultimately what it involved was some small tweaks to my pre-pregnancy personal style. Fabrications being a big one. Lightweight cottons and breezy linens that can just be thrown in the wash are high on my list of essentials. Accentuating the waist at just the right point. Longer lengths. An expanded colour palette (not that you’d know it by looking at the outfit above). A little bit of print.

But still all about the classics. My “M.O.” hasn’t really changed. While I want whimsy and fun (to an extent), I’m still relying on all my old style rules when adding new items to my closet. Waiting 30 days before shopping (95% of the time); identifying 3-5 ways to style a potential new addition with items I already own; being considerate of colour palettes; and shopping primarily natural fibres.

This dress is one of those examples which ticks all the boxes. It’s a sleeveless maxi dress, belted at the waist: classic enough. The tiered detail through the skirt adds femininity and feels on-trend. The fabrication is cotton – great for the summer. Not a non-negotiable but it’s lined too which is a bonus. The navy hue works seamlessly with my wardrobe. And I can imagine five ways to wear it straight off the bat. As is, above. With a leather jacket and some strappy heeled sandals for a “cocktail” appropriate look. Worn with a cardigan slung over the shoulders and flat slides. Layering over a thin knit with some ankle boots. Or worn with a chunky sweater, belted at the waist and some ballet flats.

Other outfits you’re likely to see me in right now? Simple cotton tanks or camisoles tucked into high-waisted shorts. Slim-fitting jeans with a tee and slip on slides. Sleeveless or one-shoulder tops tucked into mini skirts.

As far as I’m concerned, summer is all about keeping cool. The more comfortable something is, the better.
