Derby Day Spring Racing Edit

Spring Racing season is just around the corner, so it’s time to get organised and style your outfits ahead of each day. Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be sharing a helpful style guide for each of the big four on the Spring Racing calendar, complete with trends, dress code regulations, millinery edits, dresses and all the inspiration to help you get sorted.

Derby Day

Kicking off the Spring Racing Carnival is the iconic Derby day; always held on the first Saturday in November. It’s one of the easiest race days to style yourself for, as it’s traditionally known for the sophisticated black and white dress code. While it can be hard to stand out in the sea of monochrome, there’s a few styling tricks you can use to really set yourself apart from the crowd.

Before putting your outfit together, it’s important to understand race wear dress code regulations. By tradition, you’re expected to dress conservatively. In recent years, race goers have pushed the boundaries with their outfits, opting for dresses with cut outs, menswear and suiting, shorter hemlines and bare shoulders. It’s worth noting that breaking tradition can mean you’re refused entry into particular member areas however, so tread with caution if your outfit doesn’t fully adhere to the dress code (you can view the dress code HERE).

Trends

What to wear | This year’s racing season is about being bold and iconic, and the traditional Derby Day is no exception. Aim to be chic and elegant – avoid short hemlines or dressing too formal. Trends that will be seen throughout the entire racing season include voluminous silhouettes, midi hem lengths, exaggerated sleeves and suiting.

As all race goers will generally be wearing the same colours on Derby Day, it’s important to find interesting ways to stand out among the crowd. A great way to do this is by introducing texture to your look; think lace, embellishment/beading, tulle or crochet. You can also keep things interesting with a graphic print; something that’s always popular on Derby Day, and can really elevate your race day look.

Bonus Make-up Tip | While colour is generally perceived as a ‘no no’ for Derby Day, sporting a cheeky red lip or nails can help add a dash of colour into your monochromatic outfit.

Millinery | Boater hats will continue through from last season, but headbands, clips and bows are going to be a big focus this year. If you’ve opted for a minimally designed dress, this is where you can really go for gold with a big floppy straw hat, visor or daring crown. If you’re wearing a dress with a lot of volume, keep your millinery simple by accessing with a dainty headband.

Fancy feet | If you’re playing with print or lush heavy fabrics, keep your shoes simple. Stick to a low or block heel for comfort – it can be a long day on your feet. The biggest trick is to be familiar with your shoe choice. Make sure you’ve worn them at least once or twice ahead of Derby Day, as the last thing you want to do is pop the cherry on a new pair of (uncomfortable) heels, that you’re carrying around by the end of the day.
