How to make the most of your wardrobe

This year has been about introducing fewer but better items into my wardrobe. I’ve been replacing the urge to shop for something new with the opportunity to look at what I already own with fresh eyes. It’s kept me inspired to be creative with what I have, but also find comfort in a familiar uniform. I know I’ve said this a few times already, but intention and longevity have been huge drivers behind the style purchases that I have made.

Wearing White by FTL tank (I love the look of this one), ASOS denim skirt (similar here), Yoli+Otis blazer (old but current season here and more affordable here), Jane Debster slides, Fendi bag, Linjer watch, Orelia bracelet, Mejuri rings, Madewell earrings

Not only is re-styling what you have a more sustainable option than buying new, but it’s better on the wallet, and reduces the stress of feeling overwhelmed by clothes. So read on if you’d like to know my tips on how to get more out of your current closet.

Keep your wardrobe organised by season

I’ve only recently started doing this, and it’s been a total game-changer. By storing away out-of-season items, you can have a better idea of what is practical to wear just at a glance. For me, this means tucking the camisoles in another cupboard during winter, and keeping my snuggly knit sweaters out of sight once it warms up. We’ve probably all been faced by decision fatigue when staring into our wardrobes, and this is a simple way to visibly reduce our options. Trust me when I say you’ll end up feeling like you have more options at your disposal.

Be practical

This tip is one I use more when shopping for my wardrobe, but it’s to be practical when buying anything new. Is it going to be easy to care for? Does it suit your lifestyle? Does it match the overall aesthetic of your wardrobe? It’ll seem like a bit of a no-brainer, but I speak from experience when I say too many times have I found myself adding something to my wardrobe which realistically, I know I’ll seldom wear.

Build outfits around one key piece

To avoid feeling like certain elements of my outfit are competing for attention, I like to build my outfits around one central piece. I feel like this gives me a little more bang for my buck – especially when it comes to those special items. In the outfit above, my key piece is that beautiful linen blazer (a purchase from early last year). I wanted this to be the hero of my outfit and have a real wow factor, so I kept all the other details pared back. You don’t need to have a wardrobe of just basics or neutrals to do this either!

Try a Capsule Wardrobe

One of my favourite ways to come up with new styling combinations is to do a mini capsule wardrobe. I personally love the 10X10 challenge as it’s the least intimidating. Ten items over ten days is a reasonable number to work with, and you’d be surprised how little you actually end up needing.

Have a styling session with a friend

Your wardrobe probably has more potential than you think, all it needs is a set of fresh eyes. Invite one of your stylish friends over and spend a few hours playing dress up – they’ll likely pull together combos you hadn’t even thought of, breathing new life into some of your wardrobe favourites.

Take care of what you have

I recently shared how I care for my clothing, and honestly, I think this is one of the most important parts in making your wardrobe go the extra mile. If a wardrobe staple is looking a little bit tatty, a little bit of TLC will go a long way!
