It’s no secret that my favourite trend of the moment is neutrals. You just need to take one glance at my Instagram to see just how much of an obsession I seem to have. I don’t generally tend to buy into trends, but this is one I can wholeheartedly get on board with (especially as you probably have some neutrals in your closet already).

Wearing Everlane sweater, Everlane wide leg chinos, Everlane day heels, Charles & Keith bag, Thomas Sabo hoops (10% off with code ‘JAMIE-LEE10’), Missoma necklace, Linjer watch

Monochromatic looks are one of my biggest tricks to looking effortlessly put together (without actually trying), and it’s the key way that I’ve seen neutrals worn for the season so far. So today, I thought I’d share three of my simple tricks for wearing neutrals head to toe, while still keeping your outfit looking interesting.

STICK TO ONE TONE

If you’re planning on wearing neutrals head to toe, the easiest way to nail the look is to stick to one tone. That means, wearing either all warm tones, or all cool tones. This will help your outfit look cohesive, even if you’re wearing varying shades of the same colour. You can see this in action in my outfit above, where I’ve opted for a full look of cool tones.

TEXTURE, TEXTURE, TEXTURE

The way to make a neutral-toned outfit is to introduce texture. This creates visual interest, and also gives definition to each aspect of your look. I put this into practice by pairing an open-knit sweater with smooth cotton trousers, suede heels, and a faux leather bag. The main bulk of the outfit is essentially the same colour, but this mix of textures stops it from falling flat.

GO BOLD WITH YOUR BAG

A head to toe neutral look doesn’t have to be boring, either. I like to offset my outfit with a bold bag. It’s a simple way to add in a burst of colour without overpowering your outfit. A bag that pulls neutral or is the same tone as your outfit is usually the best complement. In this instance, I’ve gone for a rich terracotta shoulder bag, which is a statement-maker on its own with the wavy strap detail. This is a colour I’ve seen paired with neutrals over and over, and it’s the perfect finishing piece for this rather muted outfit.

Jamie, the bag is gorgeous. Is it leather? Also, do you know if they ship to the US? I can’t tell from their site. Love the neutrals posts….thanks!

Thank you Carey! The bag is made from faux leather – I’m actually going to share a mini review in my next What I wear in a Week which I believe will be up on Sunday if you want to know a bit more about it. I am pretty sure they ship worldwide too 🙂

Hi! I just purchased these chinos and love them except I can’t figure out how to tuck in shirts without the outline showing a LOT through the fabric. How did you manage to tuck in the sweater and have it not show under the pants?

Sorry for the delay! I have found that these pair best with tops that are shorter. I would tuck in just around the waistband to avoid getting any of those lines and for the sweater, it’s just the hem tucked in.
