Happy Friday everyone! Today, I wanted to give you a real look at my entire wardrobe. 2019 is the year that I’m really trying to stay true to my personal style, and enjoy what I have, so I wanted to do this exercise to visually document my closet, and get a real eye for what I’m actually drawn to. There probably aren’t too many surprises to the contents (except that there’s probably more than you think…!), as I focus more on neutrals than colour, and I’ve really found myself going back to basics with my style. So, let’s dive into my closet, shall we?

TOPS & SWEATERS

Tops are probably where I struggle the most. Aside from being well stocked up when it comes to basics, I find it challenging to come across a top which is interesting and unique, fits my personal style, and will also manage well in the Sydney climate. I generally avoid anything too low cut, and like the silhouette to be slightly relaxed. Not so much so that it hides my frame, though. Especially now that I am working from home, I have found myself gravitating more towards basic tees or cotton tanks – things that are easy to wear while still keeping me cool. There’s the odd pattern thrown in there too, and I always favour the same details. Stripes, polka dots, and ruffles.

I really built up my sweater collection in 2018, and it’s my favourite part of my entire wardrobe. It’s here that I opt for slouchy, boxy, oversized silhouettes, and I love a good rollneck sweater. My colour palette is pretty neutral; I opt for basics 9 times out of 10, and my go-to for a basic but quality design is Everlane for sure.

BLAZERS, JACKETS & COATS

2018 was the year of the blazer. My love for this classic wardrobe staple was reignited and I found myself adding quite a few to my wardrobe – aside from the Helmut Lang one I’ve had over 7 years now, the rest are all relatively new by comparison. I avoid anything too boxy as it looks a bit overwhelming on my frame given I have narrow shoulders.

I’m ‘light’ on jackets; I have four that I reach for, all of which I’d consider classics. After selling my Acne Studios leather jacket a little over two years ago, I spent some time on the hunt for the perfect one – something that was a little more fitted, and I found my match at All Saints, and cannot wait to start cycling this into my outfits once the weather cools down. Another favourite is a good trench. My current beige one is from Everlane and I like that it’s a little slouchy, though have had it on my mind to invest in a Burberry one as I know it’s something that I would hang on to forever.

Then we have my collection of coats. I’ll admit I have more coats than I need given I live in a pretty mild climate (I’d probably liken it to LA weather for those of you based in the US). Of my entire wardrobe, this is where I seriously like to invest. I bought my dream coat from Stella McCartney last year (similar), which has really cemented my inclination to spend a bit more when it comes to outerwear – generally, it’s worth it. For something more affordable but super cosy and warm, I’m loving my renew puffer from Everlane. This was a surprise for me – I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do, and I can’t wait to get this into regular rotation come winter time.

DRESSES

When I first downsized my wardrobe a few years back, dresses were the first thing to go. I wanted separates; things that could be mixed and matched effortlessly. Most of what I do have is generally reserved for special occasions, though I have added a few linen dresses into the mix over the last six months which have been great summer staples so far. I usually like to opt for neutral colours but with a twist, whether that be the presence of ruffles, or a fun polka dot print.

SKIRTS, SHORTS & TROUSERS

It’s no secret that I really love denim. The skirts I tend to reach for daily are little denim minis – they’re great to pair with a silk cami or simple tee and really align with that effortless dressing which I think is present in my entire wardrobe. For winter, I have a couple of leather minis, which I love and help to add a bit of texture in (and look great paired with oversized knit sweaters).

For shorts, I like something that is high waisted, and is loose around the thigh. Given I carry slightly more of my height in my torso, I find that this really balances out my proportions. The loose or billowy cut through the leg is great if you’re looking for comfort, plus I find it keeps me cooler on those scorching hot days.

My denim collection really ballooned in 2018 so I’ve done my best to cut it down slightly to my favourites. I mostly like a skinny leg jean (mid to high rise, of course!), though a tapered straight leg also really works well with my silhouette. I’m not big on light wash denim, instead opting for mid blue rinses, bone white or faded black.

Rounding out my closet are my stash of trousers, which I’ve been trying to build up as an alternative to denim. Tapered styles are my best friend, and I like these to cut off just a little above the ankle.
