Sale season is in full swing, and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been tempted at least a few times to mindlessly browse. It’s a trap I’d find myself falling in constantly during my early twenties. Justifying a pair of $300 (USD) shoes because they’re on sale! And I figured, it was the best time to really “upgrade” my wardrobe. So instead of sharing a weekly wishlist this Friday, I thought I’d talk about a recent sale purchase instead.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that the key to a good sale purchase is one you already had sitting on your wishlist. Which for me, was case in point with this cotton peplum top from Tibi

One thing I’ve become acutely aware of over the past twelve months is how few gaps there are in my wardrobe. I don’t really have any desire to shop for a new black blazer, because I have a couple which I already love. Why mess with a good thing?

What I have been craving though, is shape. New silhouettes which feel modern and fresh – to me – yet aren’t a huge departure from my usual style whims.

Which is sort of what brings me to this top. The peplum creates drama at the waist, while the voluminous puff sleeves feel slightly on-trend. But not in a way that I’ll tire of that detail after a couple of months. I also found myself drawn to the wide open neckline, and banded detail at the hem. Plus in white, it felt really sharp, and the type of item that’d pair back well during the transitional months with a good chunk of my closet.

I waited the obligatory 30 days plus to be sure that this wasn’t a passing fancy. And I had time to consider its versatility. Would it work with at least five outfits? Could I dress it up and down? How many months of the year could I reasonably wear it?

To further lean into that wearability, I went for a “colour” which I knew would be easy to style with what I already owned. That said, if you are more daring that I with your colour palette, this muted green is divine.

It’s an oft-used phrase of mine, but it’s safe to say this is one which will be on high rotation for late winter through spring (perhaps as part of a capsule wardrobe…). How are you evaluating your purchases this sale season?
