Spring 30X30: Outfits Days 16-20

Spring 30X30 Capsule Wardrobe

It’s funny how much your mindset can change in the span of a week. The last time I was sharing an update on what I’ve been wearing, I mentioned that I felt frustrated and stuck with this capsule. Today, I’m more at ease with what I’ve picked. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I’m tip-toeing towards the end of this monthly challenge. Or, it could just be down to the fact that we are highly adaptable beings, swiftly working through challenges – no matter how small or insignificant they may be.

From an outfits perspective, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag. I still haven’t utilised all 30 items yet. But for some reason, I find myself hesitant to venture away from the items I’ve had on repeat. Funny that. Instead it’s pushed me to be more flexible with the items I am wearing. And perhaps also consider how I’d pair or style items differently if I was allowing myself access to my entire wardrobe. Usually, it’s something as minor as a different style of shoe to the three I picked. A reminder that accessories have such incredible power over the way an outfit looks and feels.

Stripes tend to be a bit of a non-negotiable in my closet. They’re one of the few prints I love and wear without fail, and I knew when building this capsule that they’d be a feature. I decided to add in a new striped number – this linen/hemp tee from Madewell. There’s a subtle hint of colour, as the stripes are black, blue and red. I wore that with my straight leg jeans, my Gucci loafers, and my Kindersalmon trench coat. Overall, I was going for a bit of a neutral theme with this outfit.

Aside from “neutrals” the other trend I’ve found myself inexplicably drawn to has been the cardigan trend. To me, it just makes sense. I love a good staple that does double or even triple duty, and cardigans are all that and then some. I wore this alpaca cropped version from Everlane, slightly unbuttoned, and tucked into my favourite new trousers from Arket. Accessories seemed to match a little – brown on brown. This is one of those easy styling tricks which I think always looks really chic.

This was my outfit from last Sunday. It was hot, and I wanted to wear something relatively fuss free. Denim shorts are always easy, so to dress them up I decided to wear them with a simple cotton shirt. This one I bought from Alex Mill a few months ago, and I love that the collar is detachable too – makes it feel so versatile. For shoes, I opted for my Birkenstock sandals. I have to admit, as I come to the end of this month, I’m finding this a little challenging to wear. The material is quite stiff and hard, so there’s zero give. It means that they put a bit of pressure across the vamp of my foot. From the almost continuous wear, it feels like I have some light (but not visible) bruising. I still love these shoes, but if I had my time over I think I would have just spent a little more to get the suede version.

Again with the alpaca knit, but honestly, it’s the perfect piece when it’s a little cool. Or you just want something snuggly to wear. This time I paired it with my skinny jeans from Madewell, and did that thing that always seems like an oxymoron – wore sandals with this look. That whole vibe may even seem a little more misplaced given I also threw on a trench. I get asked this a lot, but no, I don’t find that this makes me cold. It’s probably because I compensate with extra layers up top.

I’ve been a little surprised by how much I’ve managed to wear this oversized & Other Stories sweater. And despite my initial hesitations about how oversized it it, I’ve totally come round. It’s a reminder again how quickly we adapt, and get used to change (or just something new). This time, I wore them with my Arket trousers, and I actually loved this colour combo. I didn’t really anticipate that these trousers would go with so much, but I honestly think they are just brilliant – from the colour, down to the cut and the fabric. Because my sweater was so oversized, I decided to also play out that silhouette with my shoes, opting for the Birks, again. I did that matching thing with my accessories too.
