Styling 2022 Trends

Just because your closet leans on the more classic end of the spectrum, it doesn’t mean that you can’t – or don’t want to – participate in trends. Key to making this work for you, is identifying trends which are ultimately timeless, but just seem to be capturing the current fashion zeitgeist. If a trend could be trend-less, these would be them.

The main ones on my radar?

Oversized blazers, which have been a solid style staple the past three decades (at least). From a personal perspective, these recall memories of the vintage era in the early days of blogging. I spent months trying to track down a vintage navy Ralph Lauren blazer, but could never quite find one in my size which was also in my price range.

Chunky loafers, a modernised take on an enduring classic. I like to look at them as a way to play with proportions, and balance out a silhouette. Especially love the way they look with trousers or skirts which are a little “bottom” heavy. That is, items which have a lot of volume or bulk around the ankles.

Fluid trousers are a nice way to incorporate tailoring in a relaxed way; at least, in how I’ve seen them styled. Paired with tatty sneakers, or chunky sandals (ugly in the good kind of way), the contrast in styles seems to work harmoniously. Perhaps the main appeal is that you can look put together with minimal effort, as the trousers are doing all the work for you. This one’s shaping up to be a personal favourite.

Finally we have Dopamine dressing. I’m yet to decide whether this is merely a shining beacon in a sea of neutrals, or a salve to more than two years of pandemic fatigue. But, I like it. There’s a lot to be said for enclothed cognition, and how what you wear has a real impact on your mood.
