When it comes to good basics – and I mean truly good basics – UNIQLO is one of the few places I know I can always rely on. The fit is good (classic, sometimes a little boxy which I like), I like the fabrics, and the quality is incredible. Some of my favourite UNIQLO pieces in my closet have gone through the wash countless times, and still look immaculate.

Today, in partnership with UNIQLO, I thought I’d break down my winter wardrobe essentials, and some of my favourites online right now, for those of you headed into the cosy season.

UNIQLE Brushed Short Coat Review
UNIQLO Wool Blend Long Coat

#1 | A GREAT COAT

Let’s start off with the most obvious one; a great coat. Some of my favourites over the years have come from UNIQLO as they’re always well made, impeccable tailoring, and a good price point. Depending on your climate you may find you prefer a shorter, or longer length option. My two picks from the UNIQLO site right now are the Brushed Short Coat; this is in a classic navy hue which will work back with everything in your closet. It has a simple collar and buttons down the centre, relaxed fit which is ideal for wearing chunky knits underneath.

For a longer length coat, I like anything that nips in at the waist. This creates shape, plus there’s this added cosy factor I associate with styles like that. My pick is the wool blend long coat; It has folded over lapels, pockets, and the aforementioned belt at the waist. Also love the midi length – looks so chic worn open but also all secured and snug, too.

UNIQLO Ultra Light Down Puffer

#2 | THE PUFFER JACKET

For the exceptionally cold climates, where the frosty weather has some bite to it, you’ll probably also want to add a puffer to the list. I’ve been especially drawn to playing with texture and shine, so I’d be looking at UNIQLO’s classic ultra light down puffer in this shiny finish. These also pack down super small so are great to take travelling. And it won’t take up too much space in your closet!

UNIQLO Cashmere Crew Review
UNIQLO U wool ribbed cardigan with pockets

#3 | THE CASHMERE CREW

A quintessential winter staple; cashmere. Personally I like to start with a cashmere crew as it’s versatile; goes with more formal/dressed up items for the office, or paired back with jeans for the weekend. UNIQLO’s cashmere crew is one of the best, ultra soft, and you’ll find yourself reaching for it year-on-year. I also love that they always do some really fun colours. I actually have both the women’s and men’s version, so I can switch between the two depending on my desired fit. Traditional, or uber slouchy.

#4 | A TEXTURED CARDIGAN

I tend to alternate between chunky knits, classic cashmere crews, and button up cardigans. The key here, especially when building out a capsule wardrobe, is to opt for something that has texture. This one from UNIQLO is 100% wool, and is in a ribbed texture. Visually it’s interesting, and I also like the finer rib detail around the trim, and the pockets. Great worn open during the transitional season, or worn over a tee for the winter.

UNIQLO Wide Leg Trouser
Merino Midi Length Dress

#5 | THE WIDE LEG TROUSER

I’m a real convert to the wide leg trouser, and these ones from UNIQLO are designed in one of my favourite winter textures; corduroy. For me it adds a nice plush richness to an outfit, and makes even a slouchy straight leg feel special. Also worth noting that you can get these altered (even when shopping online) so you can find your perfect fit. The reason I’m opting for a wide leg? You can easily pop some thermal tights underneath, or a knee high boot for an extra bit of warmth.

#6 | THE MERINO DRESS

Merino is a great thermo regulator; a fabric which will insulate you during the cooler months, but also keep you cool during the warmer months. I love how it’s been used here for this midi length dress, with a v-neckline. Again another option you could wear both for the office or the weekend depending on the styling. The ribbed knit adds some beautiful texture, while keeping a classic fit and shape.

UNIQLO Heat Tech Review
Cashmere Scarf for winter

#7 | BASE LAYERS

Slim-fitting, cut close to the body base layers are something I often find are overlooked when considering the essentials in your closet. During the colder months I find these are a must. They allow you to add warmth without the extra bulk. UNIQLO’s Heat Tech range is the best – tried and tested and something I go back to every year. I like the turtleneck long sleeve styles as they give you the most coverage.

#8 | A SNUGGLY SCARF

Final winter wardrobe must-have is a great scarf. Cashmere, if you want something that feels luxurious. One thing I like about cashmere scarves is that they don’t need to be too bulky. The yarn is tightly woven and will keep you incredibly warm, which results in lofty, airy styles that lay beautifully around the neck. I’ve already sung the praises of UNIQLO’s cashmere, but if you’re looking to upgrade (or even just update) you scarf, their classic cashmere scarf is a winner. A great way to add in a pop of colour to your outfit too, if you wear mostly neutrals.
