Spring Wardrobe Planning (Part I)

Warm temperatures over the past week have felt like a taste of what’s to come as we transition into spring. So I thought I’d share a handful of things I’m looking forward to adding into regular rotation.

Wearing Marle Ines top (sold out but I love this style from the brand); Sezane shorts; YSL slides (also here); Louis Vuitton neverfull

High-waisted shorts | Bermudas, tailored, with a cuff at the hem. I’m excited to start baring my legs again (even if they might be looking a little pale after six months’ hibernation…). I had a bit of an “a-ha” moment earlier this year, when I realised the higher the waist, the more comfortable I felt, so I’ll be continuing to lean into that this spring season.

Tiered sundresses | Spaghetti thin straps. Ankle-skimming lengths. It’s become a bit of a signature dress silhouette for me, and I can’t wait to pull out my old favourites from Marle and Matteau, maybe layered with a thin knit or tee underneath, or a loose cardigan thrown over my shoulders.

Sheer textures | Wispy silk/cotton blends. Floaty silhouettes. I have all my basics down, so my attention has been turned to adding in interest and dimension through use of texture and shape. I especially love the Ines top from Marle, which can be worn on or off the shoulder (just adjust the tie). Definitely a piece that’ll be a big part of my spring “capsule”.

Little bursts of colour | My closet will never (again) resemble the vibrancy found on the colour wheel, but I do enjoy the odd smattering of colour from time to time. It always feels right when the weather warms up. Looking forward to intentionally wearing some of my punchier printed pieces, tied back to my beloved neutrals so that they can really pop.

Strappy sandals | As I referenced in this post, whether we’re in lockdown or not, I plan to just wear the clothes. This includes “fancy” shoes, even if I’m just wearing them to hang out in our living room. I might be late to the game, but I’m all on board the strappy, barely there, 90s sandal trend. It feels dainty, elegant refined. Perfect to balance out against boxy and oversized silhouettes.

More, and more blazers | My love for a good blazer has been seriously rekindled. Before moving to Sydney, I wore one almost every day without fail. And my reliance on that trusty third piece has returned. The key here is to keep things balanced. No heavy brushed wools. Instead opting for lightweight wool fabrications, or cotton and linen blends to reflect the shift in season.

There’s two main things I’ve been keeping in mind. The first is balance. In how I pair colours and the proportions of my outfit. Fashion is transient, and I’m relishing in the opportunity to be able to convey a subtle shift in tone as the seasons change. The second is fabrics. I’m thinking lighter and brighter here; softer, airy materials which often have grace of movement and beautiful flow. Synonymous with Australian summer style.

Inspired by the warmer weather, I’m planning to do a little audit of my seasonal items in the week or so to come. While I don’t anticipate there being many (or any) gaps, I’ve already got my eye on a couple of items which I see as being a natural complement to what I already own. I’m sure I’m not alone in craving a little bit of newness when the seasons change. I’ll share a peek at what I’m thinking of adding to my wardrobe for spring next week…
