Classic wardrobe staples underpin the foundation of many of my outfits; while I probably add more to my wardrobe than most, I try to add a little bit of intent behind new addition. But, basic can sometimes get a little boring. To mix things up, I like to look for items that are an elevated take on a classic. When it comes to denim, I look for little details like a frayed hem or some subtle distressing; for shoes, I love a low cut vamp that reveals a little bit of toe cleavage; and for tops, a fanciful ruffle goes a long way.

Wearing c/o MLM Label red silk ruffle camisole (similar here or this is a cute polka dot option), RE/Done skinny jeans, Helmut Lang blazer (old but I love this one), Everlane editor slingback flats, Velvet zodiac bag (luxe designer version), Isabel Marant belt, Reliquia earrings, Reliquia coin necklace, Linjer watch

It only takes one glance to pick up on the real hero of this outfit: the ruffle silk cami. It’s a bold colour choice for me – though I do love a little bit of red – and if you ask me, it’s the kind of piece that really commands attention. While I’ve chosen to pare it back a little for this outfit with denim and a blazer, I feel like it would look gorgeous with a full maxi skirt, or a little leather mini skirt and some strappy sandals.

STYLE NOTES

01 | The slicked back bun
I have a bit of a signature beauty style; winged eyeliner and messy hair which both seem to go hand in hand. But, I think you can never underestimate the power of a simple hair do, and how it can completely change up your look. I especially love slicking my hair back into a low bun when I’ve got a fancy meal out with Luke – it’s a great excuse to go over the top with my makeup as my face becomes a great focus of my overall ‘presence’, if you know what I mean.

02 | Black suede slingbacks
I’m still not quite over these black suede slingbacks from Everlane; they’re such an elegant style and a quintessential example of the kinds of elevated basics that I have tucked away in my wardrobe. The thin strap that wraps around the heel and the low cut vamp are two of my favourite design details, plus the fact that they’re a black suede means that they go with everything. I did a whole review on these shoes which you can read here if you haven’t already, but in a nutshell: if you opt for these (which I do recommend if you’re after a fancy flat!) then make sure they fit snug. While you can expect to get a couple blisters the first time you wear them, the elastic does relax and after than they’re a dream to wear. They’re quite a flat foot and don’t offer much in the way of support so if that’s a concern then these probably aren’t for you.

03 | Gold jewellery
Silver jewellery used to reign supreme as my accessories metal of choice, but these days, all that glitters seems to be gold. I’ve added a few new minimal jewellery pieces to my collection, and my favourites by far seem to be from the brand Reliquia. While they’re a little bit of an investment given that it’s technically costume jewellery, the designs are unique and it feels like you’re buying something special. The latest addition has been the coin pendant necklace I’m wearing above, and I’ve currently got my eye on this pair of earrings from the brand.
